75 percent of Americans admit they need to escape family during the holidays
You feel the pressure mounting. Holiday card lists. Presents to purchase. Cookies to bake. Relatives to “handle.”
You want it all to be perfect. You want it all to go smoothly. You want to make memories.
The desires spiral around you as you frantically try to keep up. Eventually, pressure overwhelms. You snap at someone you love more than anything in the world. Resentment sparks as your family drags their feet to that perfect holiday activity you planned.
Sadly, and secretly, you can’t wait for the holidays to be done.
Magic-making is making you f’ing miserable. Every year. There has to be another way, right?
Stop Making Magic and
Start Believing in Magic
Women, mothers, and daughters have been conditioned to be the magic makers. You feel the pressure to find the perfect gifts, cook the perfect recipes, and exude perfectly crafted gratitude for everything. You’ve been pressured to overproduce and overdeliver until you’re gone. Burnt out, lonely, and resentful all during the most “magical” time of the year.
You don’t deserve to live like this.
The holidays are a time for closeness. For abundance. For connection. For creation.
We remember the holidays as magical and now feel the weight of making the magic rather than enjoying the magic that is you.
Together we’re going to identify what’s really important to you about the holiday season.
We’ll focus on what you love. You. Your family. Your home. Your life. The traditions that make you feel warm and fuzzy inside. Then expand into how play integrates into what you love.
You’ll learn how to actively center your desires and joy. You’ll harness the magic of your play to create abundant joy that reverberates throughout your holiday season.
Making Magic = Forced & Laborious.
It's all on you to pull the holiday spirit out of your ass & be responsible for everyone having a good time.
Believing in Magic = Natural & Available in every moment.
You tap into the magic alive in the air & in every moment. When you tap into this, it ripples out into your entire family—without force or an ounce of planning!!
What does mindful play have to do with the holidays?
Our stress can reveal to us where we need play. And the holidays are peak stress.
But your stress is an indication that you care. Somewhere in the mess of all that stress, your heart, your drive, and your desire, are alive.
However, the pressure of being the magic maker has clouded your ability to listen to those desires. You don’t know how to untangle the pressure of what the holidays should be like instead of what you actually want.
By intentionally playing, you create clarity about what matters to you. Play is not an action. It’s the experience of your engagement with enjoyment. This practice helps you break through the noise of “shoulds” to what really matters. Joy. Connection. Love.
Rather than being driven by the stress and the shoulds, start letting play reveal what really matters to you.
But What about the Children!?
They want to know the magic never ends.
What do your kids want for the holidays (more than an iPhone)? They want to laugh with you. They want to see you sparkle under the lights. They want to remember the warmth of your body on cold nights. They want the twinkle in your eye as you add the extra marshmallows.
They want to know the magic never ends.
You are trying to change the way you do the holidays but it’s hard. You feel the cultural pressure to make it magical. You want to break away but fear disappointing who you love most.
It’s scary to change course and change traditions.
You work so hard to be a great parent. To give your children opportunity, safety, and love. You are a great parent, but has that come at the sacrifice of you?
Reset the magic of the holidays. Release the pressure to make it something magical. Instead, let’s embrace what is already magical about you, your play.
Let your play guide you through the season and let it create something magical.
TFW…You realize the truth about holiday magic
I was lucky enough to grow up with a mom who made holidays magical.
She put an enormous amount of effort into all the “special” things.
But it always came with a lot of pressure.
I could tell how much pressure she was under despite how much she loved it.
And, I could tell, no matter what, she always ended up feeling alone, disappointed, and unappreciated.
I would feel guilty and ashamed.
And to be honest, I started to hate and hide from the holidays.
The pressure was too much for me.
As an adult, and a mother, I see her pain in a whole new light. We have a society where the magic rests on the mother.
We pressure women to deliver magical moments as if they had real magic powers.
And many of us are trying to do it differently.
Working collaboratively with our partners. Caring about energy levels. Deciding more consciously about how to do the holidays in a way that feels right to us.
Picking traditions that resonate and creating new ones.
All of this is play.
It’s focusing, tinkering, exploring, and expanding.
If you want help moving through this season differently, let’s co-create a new way forward.
