Reveal Your Play Personality

The Missing Piece:
 Play as a Clinical Frame

A trauma-informed education and consultation group that will help you learn the forgotten side of mindfulness, reawaken your own playfulness, and integrate joy into your clinical work with adult clients.

As clinicians, we are asked to do healing work in a world that thrives and depends on pain. The impact of cultural trauma is real. We know the current system isn’t enough for the deep fatigue and burnout we and our clients feel in this moment. We need a new path forward. One that engages the best parts of us. Our creativity, our imaginations, and our problem-solving. Play is that path.

This fall, join The Missing Piece: Play as a Clinical Frame to start playing in your clinical practice and help your adult clients with joy-centered work.

Sessions will take place on the first and third Wednesday of each month from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM ET starting Wednesday, September 3, 2025. This education and clinical consultation group is ideal for clinicians who:

  • Have an adult client base.
  • Know this world is fucked up and that societal systems can cause harm.
  • Feel there's a missing piece to the mindfulness puzzle.
  • Want to sit more confidently in the uncertainty of healing.
  • Realize that nervous system regulation is more than being calm and displaying “good behavior.”
  • Support liberation in healing practices but are unsure of actually how to do that in practice.
  • Nerd out on the nervous system and want to learn more about the blended state of play.

Educational session topics include:

  • September 2025
9/3: Primal Personality: The Play Drive Across the Lifespan

    9/17: Clinical Consultation & Integration

In the first session, you’ll learn how to redefine play as an embodied and intellectual experience rather than an action. This paradigm shift will help you understand play as a primal drive and biological need as well as play as a nervous system state.

  • October 2025

10/1: The Play Wave: What Makes and Breaks the Joy Experience

    10/15: Clinical Consultation & Integration

A deeper dive into the play experience and how to identify the sparks and the suppression of play. A discussion on the cultural impact on a person’s play and exploring the intersection of traditional diagnosis with signs of play deprivation.

  • November 2025

11/5: Pattern Exploration: Discovering, Breaking, Strengthening, and Cultivating

    11/19: Clinical Consultation & Integration

Play is like a fingerprint, and in this session you’ll learn ways to identify a person’s play patterns. You’ll be empowered with new language that will help you understand, shape, and change patterns through play.

  • December 2025

12/3: Conceptualization and Navigation: Play and Joy-Driven Treatment Planning

    12/17: Clinical Consultation & Integration

Learn how to use play to craft a treatment plan that is oriented towards authenticity and liberation. The session will explore specific treatment goals versus non-linear experiential goals and using play to gamify growth.

Meet TJ

Therapist, Play Teacher, Joy Liberator

I began my journey as a trauma therapist in 2014 with a deep dive into experiential and expressive trauma practices with The Ferentz Institute, led by world-renowned trauma therapist Lisa Ferentz. This foundation unlocked my love for those stuck in repetitive trauma patterns.

Trauma-informed care allows us to sit with clients with profound presence and compassion. We allow clients to come back to themselves and share the unspoken stories of their soul. However, I still found myself, and my clients, stuck in the confines of mindfulness culture. While I understood the value of the stillness…it left me asking, well, what’s next?

How do we help clients not just cope with a system that continues to cause them harm, but feel empowered to change harmful patterns and systems?

How do we help clients not only sit in the quiet stillness of their stories but also empower them to move back into the aliveness of life?

I went on to get trained in Brainspotting, which is where something really came alive for me. Their tenant “follow the comet,” meant anchoring into the uncertainty and practicing with a deep commitment to the relational experience. It forced me to abandon the idea of a “right” way and threw me into the vulnerability of my creativity.

Personally, and clinically, I took a deep dive into what it meant to “feel alive” and found the missing piece…play.

Play is a primal drive and blended state of the nervous system where we feel both a sense of safety and fear. It’s riding the line between fight/flight and ventral safety and belonging. It is the place we actually heal, grow, and change. But most adults are deeply play-deprived.

No one was teaching this state of being, much less how to recultivate it as an adult. I continued to dive in, learn, explore, and practice. After nearly 10 years, lots of other trainings, and profoundly important mentors, I have now guided hundreds of adults into an embodied life that aligns with their values and joy. Using play.

Orienting my clinical mind towards playfulness helps me ask questions with curiosity, assess with non-judgment, and trust my impulses as a clinician. It eased my professional burnout, helped me build more genuine relationships with clients, and reignited my love for clinical care.

Play deprivation is a serious threat to health and well-being, but it is severely misunderstood in adult clients. My work now considers the impact of play deprivation on clinical diagnosis. I am equipped to support my clients in recultivating playfulness as their human right

By understanding the role play has on your mind and body, you can form new patterns and transform your life. Play empowers our work to shift from trauma coping and treatment to trauma liberation and systemic change.

Play is a primal drive in human biology and is the blended state of ventral (safe and belonging) and sympathetic (fight/flight). It is well established that play is critical for children in life and healing from trauma. Yet, play is missing from current clinical education and treatment planning for adults.

And we’re here to change that.

Over four months, TJ will help you learn the forgotten side of mindfulness, reawaken their own playfulness, and integrate joy into their clinical framework.
