What is Play as a Mindfulness Practice?
We’re taught that play is an action taken by children, but that’s completely wrong.
Play is an engaged mental state. It’s an embodied experience where enjoyment and engagement meet.
It’s personal. It’s found and expressed differently in everyone.
It’s the feeling of losing track of time.
An excitement or giddiness you cannot contain.
Of losing a sense of self in an experience.
A sparkle in your eye and a zest for life.
You don’t see play, you feel it.
Studies show that engaging in play is one of the most powerful ways to reduce stress, improve wellness, and buffer against anxiety and depression. A 2017 study found that 72% reported a significant decrease in stress after engaging in playful activities. By engaging in play, study participants reported a 31% reduction in feelings of loneliness and an overall increase in life satisfaction.

For over a decade, in my role as a trauma therapist, I’ve walked with people trapped in the shadows of their own lives, stuck in a loop they couldn’t escape. But that’s where I discovered something powerful—play. It wasn’t just a game, it was a lifeline. It cracked open a new world, one where I’ve helped hundreds break free and reconnect with who they truly are, guiding them toward lives filled with joy and purpose. Play isn’t just fun—it rewires the mind, reshapes the body, and reignites the soul.
