What is Play as a Mindfulness Practice?
We’re taught that play is an action taken by children, but that’s completely wrong.
Play is an engaged mental state. It’s an embodied experience where enjoyment and engagement meet.
It’s personal. It’s found and expressed differently in everyone.
It’s the feeling of losing track of time.
An excitement or giddiness you cannot contain.
Of losing a sense of self in an experience.
A sparkle in your eye and a zest for life.
You don’t see play, you feel it.
Studies show that engaging in play is one of the most powerful ways to reduce stress, improve wellness, and buffer against anxiety and depression. A 2017 study found that 72% reported a significant decrease in stress after engaging in playful activities. By engaging in play, study participants reported a 31% reduction in feelings of loneliness and an overall increase in life satisfaction.
But, for many, reconnecting to play is hard. The prescription “go have fun” is overwhelming. Where do you begin?
By treating play with the seriousness and commitment of other wellness modalities, you commit to centering your joy, expression, and creativity.
At The Playful Revolution, we teach you the tangible steps needed to build your playful practice, one that integrates into your life and ignites your soul.
You’ll be present in a meaningful and vibrant life that doesn’t require waiting for the “right” moment, the “dream” job, to "fix" your partner, or till your kids are older. You’ll build a life you love, a joy you cannot contain, exactly where you are.
How the Nervous System Impacts Play
Play is a blended neurological state that combines the safety and connection of the Ventral state with the energy and activation of the Fight/Flight state. It's the state that exists between the resting and the stressing.
By activating the play state, you’re able to test and form new patterns for the brain–which is essential for building resilience to stress, burnout, or overwhelming demands of life.
Play is what helps us learn to move up and down this nervous system ladder with more confidence and capacity.
When you develop your Playful Mind, you become more able to recognize your Fight/Flight, Freeze, or Collapse states and navigate through them or stop them from starting. You’ll become attuned to the play that helps your nervous system.
